Poetry Reading at the Torriano, Sunday evening 29th Jan 2017

We are doing a poetry reading – “Thistles and Andromeda” 7.30pm, Sunday 29th January at the Torriano Meeting House, 99 Torriano Av, Kentish Town, NW5 2RX. A reading by Chris Dodd, Stephen Elves, Wendy French, Susannah Hart, Norbert Hirschhorn, Ruth Ingram, Lisa Kelly, Cheryl Moskowitz, Christine Webb and Christopher Williams. It may be a bit crammed, but it’s a chance to support the Torriano Meeting House and hear the reading we performed at the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival last November. Admission £5/£4 (according to pocket).

Coffee House Poets – The Troubadour Club, 12th Dec 2016

Thanks to Anne-Marie and Cahal again for Coffee House Poets at the Troubadour Club on Monday night. The place was packed and great atmosphere. The theme was “Here comes the night”. Many of us read for this end of series reading – in a format that works remarkably well. I thought the poems were surprisingly positive – given the world in 2016. And a great ending with Alex Josephine (sorry if I have her name wrong!) reading “Sheet Lightning” and Ron Villaneuva reading “Tenebrae”. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s planned for Coffee House Poets in 2017.

Aldeburgh 2016 (and 2017)

Thanks to everyone involved in making an Aldeburgh poetry festival happen this November. It was a different festival, back in Aldeburgh itself, not Snape and was somewhat simpler, however, it was a great success and well attended. As part of the festival, the Torriano Meeting House Group did a reading at the Peter Piers Gallery. Readers were (in alphabetical order): myself, Stephen Elves, Wendy French, Susannah Hart, Norbert Hirschhorn, Ruth Ingram, Lisa Kelly, Cheryl Moskowitz, Christine Webb, Christopher Williams. We tried a new reading format, which seemed to work well. Thanks to the many of you who came to listen. At the end of the festival there was an announcement that there would be a festival in 2017 too. Great news.

Coffee House Poetry – Sea theme evening

Well, that was an epic series of readings last night at the Troubadour, a big crowd even by the standards of Coffee House Poetry – and over 50 readers with quite a diverse take on the sea. Many read their own poems, a few read favourite published poems. I read “Sea Watching” by RS Thomas  – well worth a read if you don’t know it, if for no other reason than the enjambment, which does so much.

It was hard to write down folk’s names and poems with so many reading however. Ron Villaneuva read  “You Will Drown For Poems” (for Dennis Kim) which had a chant and an emotional intensity. I think Katherine Maris read some George Seferis from “The King of Asini”. Echoes for this time. I’m not sure if this was the translation, but here’s the one on the Poetry Foundation site:

Anyhow, great to see such a big poetry crowd and hear so many poems.
